OUR STORY
How did Campo Marina start in Osoyoos? Well...my mother “Mamma Rubie”...worked as a chef in a small southern Mediterranean town. Her daily baked bread, veal dishes and lasagna made with leek, spinach, and ricotta mixed with feta and virgin olive oil made her a culinary institution in the local area and naturally...I yearned to bring my mother's Mediterranean recipes to everyone.

I was trained in Europe primarily in French cuisine and have worked for major hotels such as the Constellation in Toronto and the former Commonwealth in London. Then as in all things...some years passed...and in the Spring of 1994, with starting a restaurant forefront on my mind, I was driving through Osoyoos when my car developed mechanical problems.
While waiting for the car to be repaired I went to the Rialto hotel and while I was sitting at the bar ordering some food and a drink this very amiable Spanish fellow asked me who I was. I told him, and in the conversation elaborated further that I was looking to start a restaurant. Astonishingly he said..."You can have ours, pay no gas, no hydro, no phone bill and we will throw a room in with the deal, but just make me a meal a day!” I had no idea he was serious until he showed me the place and then I knew destiny had smiled on me. So, with a $500 budget most of which went to paint and stock I started Campo Marina at the old Laposada de Rialto on May 5, 1994.

Thank-you Phillipe, wherever you are!    Mike.
